For seasons, it has been dominated by algorithmic paintings, deep-fried digital collages, and sterile screen displays that ask us to contemplate data streams from a safe, intellectual distance. The technology has been treated primarily as an engine for generating imagery, a disembodied brain trapped behind a glass monitor.
This autumn, a monstrous arachnid intends to tear through that screen.
Frieze has announced Athens-based artist Theo Triantafyllidis as the winner of the prestigious 2026 Frieze London Artist Award. In a monumental shift for the prize, this year’s commission explicitly required the recipient to experiment with advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, as a core collaborative tool. Partnering with Google Arts & Culture and the contemporary art non-profit Forma, Triantafyllidis has responded with Feral Metaverse (Spider) (2026)—a colossal, interactive sculpture that will confront, invite, and potentially terrify attendees at Regent’s Park from October 14–18.
To understand how Triantafyllidis arrived at this hybrid beast, one must look to his foundational training. Before diving into the avant-garde fringes of virtual reality (VR) and game engine mechanics, he trained as an architect. This structural pedigree informs his entire approach to digital art. He does not view virtual space as an infinite, floaty vacuum; he treats it as a physical site subject to volume, spatial friction, and human navigation.
Over the past decade, his Athens studio has become a laboratory for subverting commercial game design. Instead of building polished, hyper-optimized virtual environments, Triantafyllidis injects elements of chaos, biological decay, and awkward physicality into his simulations. He populates his worlds with weird, fleshy chimeras, challenging the smooth, corporate perfection of Silicon Valley’s version of the metaverse.
With Feral Metaverse (Spider), Triantafyllidis collapses the barrier between the physical gallery space and the algorithmic abyss. The commission functions simultaneously as an imposing, tactile playground sculpture and a live, multiplayer gaming ecosystem driven by machine learning.
The giant arachnid sculpture acts as a physical gateway. Visitors are explicitly told to cast aside traditional museum etiquette and “embrace the feral”—they are invited to climb onto the creature, hang from its steel limbs, and physically wrestle with its form.
Yet, the sculpture is not a passive playground fixture. Developed in collaboration with engineers at Google Arts & Culture, the spider’s computational brain operates as a real-time multiplayer simulation. As participants interact physically with the structure, they trigger changes in an underlying digital world.
The system requires participants to bypass traditional verbal communication or written text. Instead, groups of total strangers must coordinate their physical weight, movements, and body contact on the sculpture to unlock different dystopian virtual realms projected within the space. It is an exploration of non-verbal, swarm-like collective behavior, managed and interpreted by an AI interface.
