Rafael Fernández Caballero, a Spanish photographer, has made waves in the art world by winning the prestigious title of “Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.” His stunning image capturing a rare Bryde’s whale voraciously devouring a heart-shaped bait has become a breakthrough in underwater photography, standing out among over 15,000 entries from talented photographers worldwide.
This was perhaps the most special and surreal moment of my life, i’ am incredibly grateful to have not only witnessed this encounter but also to have captured it.
Caballero shared, reflecting on the experience
Alongside Caballero’s triumph, Malaysian photographer Ipah Waid Lynn was awarded the “Women’s Fifty Fathoms” prize, which recognizes outstanding women in the field of underwater photography.
Lynn expressed her heartfelt gratitude, emphasizing that this accolade is not only a recognition of her personal achievements but also an affirmation of the importance of women’s voices in oceanic photography.
