The art world is set to witness a groundbreaking collaboration as Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum present Sag mir wo die Blumen sind (Tell Me Where the Flowers Are), an ambitious exhibition by German artist Anselm Kiefer. Running from 7 March to 9 June 2025, this dual-venue showcase merges Kiefer’s striking works with the enduring legacy of Vincent van Gogh, creating a rich dialogue between two iconic artists.
Highlights of the Exhibition
Van Gogh Museum:
Kiefer’s recent works will be displayed alongside seven Van Gogh masterpieces, including the iconic Wheatfield With Crows (1890).
The exhibition draws parallels between Kiefer’s vast, panoramic landscapes and Van Gogh’s emotionally charged late works.
Visitors can explore Kiefer’s personal connection to Van Gogh, reflected in a diary and sketches documenting his teenage pilgrimage tracing Van Gogh’s journey through Europe.

Stedelijk Museum:
A selection of Kiefer’s early works from the museum’s collection will be exhibited, including Innenraum (1981) and Märkischer Sand (1982).
The centrepiece, Sag mir wo die Blumen sind (2024), a near-24-metre-long painting featuring paint, clay, uniforms, dried rose petals, and gold, will adorn the historic staircase.
Themes of war, fragility, and regeneration are woven into this monumental work, evoking the poignant protest song Where Have All the Flowers Gone?
A Unified Vision
This is the very first time our museums have worked together on one exhibition, one exhibition, one ticket, two museums—it’s a true collaboration and a metaphorical diptych.
– said Emilie Gordenker, Director of Van Gogh Museum.
The monumental scale of Kiefer’s work mirrors Van Gogh’s ambition, though Kiefer’s materials and themes expand to encompass history, memory, and loss.
– Edwin Becker, Chief Curator at the Van Gogh Museum, highlighted the synergy between the two artists:
Why It Matters
